Spartan Race Training Update 2012
From The ARCHIVES 7/2012: This is an old post from the very early days of when I started! I use it for reference of what I was doing right and more so WRONG, but also as motivation to see how far I have come. I will try to add in updates as I go over these, but I hope you might get something out of them!
Well the last time I wrote a post was August 20th! It has been hectic, but I have kept up with my training. The Super Spartan race is this Saturday, September 8th!
Here is a quick recap of what I have done since Aug 20th.
Well following my 5k run which was a big accomplishment for me I ended up doing another 2.5 on the Tuesday before we head to Delaware for our vacation.
Wednesday was a travel day so I did not do anything, but sit in the car and drive. My goal was to bust out 5 miles on Thursday. Thursday morning I ran out to the Nike outlet to get a new pair of sneakers. I ended up getting a pair of Nike Air Pegasus 28 which was the only sneaker Nike had that ran wide. It felt like walking on a cloud and way better to run in then my New Balance trainers.
I started my run thinking it would be a breeze since Tuesday's run I had felt really good. I was wrong. I felt like I hit a wall and at about 2 miles I was ready to quit, but I pushed on and did 5.5 miles. I did walk a handful of times, but I got the mileage in and I was real proud of that! I was tired for sure, but again it felt good since that was the most I have ever run at one time in my life.
The next day I decided to hit the gym. I jogged over to it which was about .35 miles then did a few supersets of chest and back then busted out some ab work. I worked out intensely and it felt good to throw the weights around. When I was done I felt pumped so I decided to run the long way home and got in another mile.
That was pretty much it for my working out on vacation. I ate OK, but not the best. I was going to tackle the next week real hard.
When I got back to work Monday I was feeling good and decided to do the Insanity Max Interval Circuit. It was tougher then I remembered, but it felt good to get it in. The one thing I have been noticing is that I have been able to recover a lot faster and not just get drained and be done.
On Tuesday I tackled the Insanity Upper Body Weight Training DVD which is really awesome. It is a great superset workout with some cardio thrown in. I also did Ab Ripper X from P90X as well. Ow my hip flexors lol.
On Wednesday I was going to do a mile on the stairs again, but I was feeling real sore, so… I decided to go and get a massage. Why not. I have been working hard and what better way to workout my muscles. Felt great!! Highly reccomend!
On Thursday I tackled the stairwell again and ran 1 mile and at .25 did 10 burpees, then .50 did 10 burpees, then ran the rest .50 and did 10 burpees. I was tired, but I felt good. It was a great workout and with the race being on a ski mountain I am thinking that will help.
As for Friday I had off so I was able to visit my old Crossfit Gym http://www.qcrossfit.com/ which was awesome. They actually moved to a new 4,000SF warehouse and it was sweet. We did a killer WOD. Here is how that played out.
The Warm Up
3 Rounds –
100M Runs
5 Pull Ups
10 Plyo PushUps
10 Air Squats
4 Burpees
I have to say I felt great in the warmup. The last time I was at Crossfit I could barely get 3 pullups! Remember my Pull Up Post? Anyways I was able to get all the pull ups in the 3 rounds which felt good and I Just felt strong.
The WOD….
Thrusters
5x5x5x5x5 “been awhile since I did these
12 Rounds 1 Minute Each
8 Bent Over Rows
4 Dumbell Thrusters
2 Burpees
It was tough, but it felt good to get it in and I was sore for days lol.
I ended up taking Saturday off and busted out a 5K on Sunday.
Monday night I did a light Insanity Warmup with a round of Ab Ripper X.
Tuesday was deck of cards training! WOW it was intense. You can read about it here http://kjrzeek1.hubpages.com/hub/Deck-of-Cards-Training
Lets just say as I write this on 9/7/2012 I am still sore and bit nervous I will be sore for the race tomorrow. My goal is to get in some light warmup and good stretching in today.
Ill post about how it goes next week!
